Junko Oki | Masaho Anotani

2/Sep/2017 - 7/Oct/2017

KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present a two person exhibition “Junko Oki | Masaho Anotani” from September 2nd to October 7th, 2017.

Junko Oki was selected for the 11th shiseido art egg and has recently had a solo exhibition at the Shiseido Gallery. She stitches embroidery into old cloths in an intricate and time-consuming way. Each piece has own story and the bundles of cloth take on a new life, combinations of narrative appearing as if by serendipity. Stitching with thin threads usually used for sewing machines the pieces are made without sketches, images spreading over the fabric with strong vivid expressions.

Junko Oki was born in 1963 in Urawa city. She currently lives and works in Kamakura city. Her major solo exhibitions include “Recycle” (ARTS & SCIENCE, Tokyo, 2009), “Tatoo” (Gallery B, Kanagawa, 2013), “gris gris” (DEE’S HALL, Tokyo, 2016), “junko oki” (Office Baroque, Brussels, 2017), and her major group exhibitions include “Collection 1 : Nous – Sewing and Living” at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2016). In 2014 Oki published her art book PUNK (Bungei Shunju), a collection of photographic works. Her work is included in the public collection of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

Masaho Anotani combines various media such as drawing, collage and spray painting and depicts instinct, sensation, observation, doubts, and impulses sometimes in direct ways and sometimes in surreal ways. His work has also attracted attention from the fields of fashion and design, and he has presented many collaborations with fashion brands such as COMME des GARCONS and ZUCCa. In 2016 his work was featured in STEIDL – WERK No. 23: MASAHO ANOTANI “DEFORMED”, created by a celebrated Singaporean designer Theseus Chan and a publisher STEIDL.

Masaho Anotani was born in 1991 in Hyogo. He studied design at Kyoto Seika University and Fine Art at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Holland. He currently lives and works in Tokyo. His major solo exhibitions include “Flower Bed District” (WISH-LESS gallery, Tokyo, 2015), “Between the Real and Surrealism” (CABANE de ZUCCa Daikanyama & Minamiaoyama, Tokyo, 2015), and “Full Bloom – Distant Thunder” (0fr., Paris, 2017).
