Dan McCarthy
Dan McCarthy has exhibited his work globally throughout a career that has spanned over three decades. In addition to his two-dimensional works, such as his paintings and drawings, McCarthy produces his iconic “Facepot” series, which features facial motifs on ceramic vessels, with vivid colors, tremendous expressiveness, a familiar feel to them, a sense of primitiveness, and an immediacy that evokes the hand of the artist. In McCarthyʼs work, these elements merge together to create an immediate experience that is not only visual but has a physical, and even emotional, effect on the viewer.
Dan McCarthy was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1962. He studied painting and ceramics at the San Francisco Art Institute where he received his BFA in 1984, and is currently based in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include “7 Bangers” (Anton Kern Gallery, New York, 2019), “Rainbow paintings & ceramics” (Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels, 2021), “BirdPots” (Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, 2022), and “Dan McCarthy” (Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels, 2023). He has also exhibited works in group exhibitions, including “36 Paintings” (Harper’s Books, New York, 2020), “Pacific Coast Ceramics” (Galeria Mascota, Aspen, 2020), “Show 1” (Airfield Gallery, New York, 2021). McCarthy’s works are held in many international public collections, including ICA Miami, the Aïshti Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Dakis Joannou Collection, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris.
